Dalida's Tintarella di Luna in Las Vegas hotel commercial

The Venetian Las Vegas, a luxury hotel, features "Tintarella di Luna" in its TV ad campaign

Use of European music continues in American advertising

Zambezi, the advertising agency working for The Ventian Las Vegas, has been expanding the broadcast of its novel TV ad campaign for the luxury hotel in Las Vegas.

The whimsical ad features the Italian song, "Tintarella di Luna," recorded by pop singer Mina.

The song's popularity exploded across Europe in the 1960's after it was covered by French pop icon Dalida, who recorded the song in French, Spanish, and English.

Mina's original Italian 1959 version is availabe on YouTube.

The use in American TV advertising of European songs from the 1950's to today continues it recent upswing.

In 2013, a TV commercial campaign by Google for its Chromecast Web video and music interface for HDTV units used an instrumental version of one of French pop singer Dalida's most successful songs, "La Danse de Zorba," which, in turn, was a cover of Mikis Theodorakis's "Zorbas."

Another 2013 major TV commercial for an American product used a hit French song for its soundtrack. Verizon Android Island commercial used "Comment te dire adieu" for its soundtrack.

Still yet another 2013 TV commercial, this time for Netflix, used a song, "Hey Now," from one of French pop music's most successful disk jockeys, Martin Solveig. Solveig's hit, recorded in English, shows the broadening appeal of European music in English-speaking cultures.

Sprint Framily Commercial Uses French Version of Mötley Crüe's "Home Sweet Home"

The latest Sprint commercial features a French cover of Mötley Crüe's famous song, "Home Sweet Home." A young girl, portrayed by the actress Tatyana Richaud, sings in French as she plays piano.

The Sprint commercial, for its Framily Plan, is the latest major American TV commercial that features French music. A Verizon Droid TV commercial featured Françoise Hardy's big French pop song hit, "Comment te dire adieu." One of Netflix's TV commercials uses a song, "Hey Now," from one of French pop music's most successful disk jockeys, Martin Solveig. And a long-running Google Chromecast commercial features an instrumental cover of Mikis Theodorakis's "Zorbas," which had inspired a famous French song by Dalida, "La Danse de Zorba."

It's great to see these American advertisers embrace French music like this, a sharp contrast to the French-bashing in Cadillac's widely panned commercial for its 2014 Cadillac ELR Coupe.

Several years ago, Pepsi elevated the use of French music in its "pinball" commercial with the use of the song, "Ça plane pour moi" by the American alternative rock band, The Presidents.

Les Grilles De Ma Maison

It is believed that Dalida sang this song in 1967, shortly after her lover, Luigi Tenco, committed suicide. This explains why Dalida wept during the song, which was most likely not performed live.

Dalida's cover was based on an old Country and Western/Gospel song. Porter Wagoner famously recorded the song in 1965. Can you believe that Dalida would interpret a Country and Western/Gospel song into French ?

Dalida was a supremely gifted singer. The song in its English version was about an imprisoned man singing with nostalgia about his family and his childhood home. The prisoner was reminiscing, because he was about to face execution. When Dalida sang the song, the French recomposition of lyrics had a slightly different literal meaning. The song was no longer about a death row inmate facing death, but about reaching the gates of one's home, an allusion to the Gates of Heaven, perhaps, because of Tenco's suicide. Still, it is a very powerful and emotional song.
