Michael Premo was found innocent of all charges this week in regards to a case that stems from a December 17, 2011 Occupy Wall Street demonstration in Lower Manhattan. For over a year, prosecutors working on behalf of the New York Police Department have insisted that Premo, a known artist and activist, tackled an NYPD officer during a protest and in doing so inflicted enough damage to break a bone. Troy Davis Execution - One Year Later

Revisiting the New York City Protest and March in Honour of Troy Davis

One year has passed since the execution of Troy Davis, who was widely regarded as having been an innocent man. One day after the execution, citizens and activists from the brand new Occupy Wall Street movement gathered in Union Square and commenced a march to Zuccotti Park (aka Liberty Square).

Video by Ayman El-Sayed of Existence is Resistance. New Yorkers gathered in Union Square on September 22, 2011, to protest the killing of Mr. Davis by the state of Georgia. Protestors were peaceful, but the NYPD began harassing the demonstrators as they marched to Wall Street. Police were driving their motorcycles extremely close to protestors and honking their horns. This was before they decided to attack and arrest those remembering Mr. Davis.

Following is a video of the passionate protest and march, from the point at which the march reached Houston Street onward. The march grew by picking up passers-by, one day after the execution of Troy Davis, a man believed to be innocent of the crimes charged against him. Protesters were harassed by NYPD, pushed and shoved, and at least one protester was peeled away from the crowd, shoved the floor, and arrested. Note the brash display by NYPD of what appears to be pepper spray guns, and, in at least once instance, NYPD were caught video recording the lawful peaceful activities of activists -- in direct violation of the Handschu Agreement.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Attends #OWS Healthcare for the 99% Meeting

The civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson joined the regular weekly meeting of the the Healthcare for the 99 per cent. Working Group of #OccupyWallStreet in New York last Sunday.

At the meeting, the Rev. Jackson spoke about the "exorbitant, exploitative cost of medicine." The Rev. Jackson also spoke about how the issue of healthcare access and affordability has motivated many of the hundreds of thousands of members of the 1199SEIU union to want to become part of the #OccupyWallStreet movement.

The Rev. Jackson discussed how many of the "victims" of the broken healthcare system are absent from the #OccupyWallStreet movement, and he said it was the task of the movement to find a way to motivate them to participate.

Other economic issues that the Rev. Jackson said that the disenfranchised faced were incarceration, joblessness, home foreclosures, and high amounts of student loan and credit card debt. The Rev. Jackson asked members of the working group to consider whether the disenfranchised "occupied" where they are, or whether the disenfranchised needed a physical location in order to occupy. "Is occupy a place or a space ?" The Rev. Jackson made the point that location did not define the new social movement's constituents. He added, "Those are you patients and your friends."

One day after the Rev. Jackson attended a Liberty Square meeting of the Healthcare for the 99 per cent. Working Group, the Rev. Jackson published an op-ed in the Chicago Sun-Times entitled, "Cost of broken health care system is killing us."

CUNY, NYPD Provoke Violence Among Peaceful Student Protesters

Under the caption of, "Police loving violence against the students and citizens," AnonOps Communications blog posted this observations about how private CUNY security and NYPD are increasingly using violence against peaceful protesters :

Occupy Cuny and allied protestors who gathered Monday at Baruch College to express opposition to CUNY tuition hikes, unfair labor practices, and privatization were met with an increasingly familiar response: violent suppression of their basic right to dissent. Protestors were barred from attending a so-called "public" meeting of the school's trustees and ordered to disperse. CUNY security and NYPD moved in with nightsticks drawn, turning a nonviolent protest into a chaotic melee.

During peacefully Occupy Movement, police came in to tear down tents and proceeded to arrest students who stood in their way. Once students peacefully demanded the release of the arrested, a police officer unnecessarily pepper sprays the students to open a path for the rest of the officers. The officer who sprayed the students was UC Davis Police Lieutenant John Pike, japikeiii@ucdavis.edu - (530) 752-3989. Students are also asking that everybody sign a petition, calling for the resignation of UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi for her "failure to protect UC Davis student's First Amendment right to assemble, or even their physical safety."
